This was Percy and Mary Shelly, famous nineteenth century British poet and novelist respectively. They were a married couple. Percy wrote Alastor, Adonais, The Revolt of Islam, Prometheus Unbound. Mary wrote Frankenstein. They were both vegetarians.
Side note: The fact that our author, Ms. Pessl, chose to omit their last names in her reference is really pretentious.
